About Us

Welcome to Bracken Ridge Scouts. Scouting is all about learning new life skills by doing them. We practice such skills during planed activities; yet most of all, we remember to have some fun and make life long friendships.

Bracken Ridge Scouts

Our Journey

Bracken Ridge Scout Group has been operating for over 50 years and we are proud of our record of running an excellent Scouting programme and providing opportunities for young people to learn leadership skills, participate and contribute to our local community and take part in in a wide variety of outdoor activities.

From humble beginnings, first in the grounds of Bracken Ridge State School and later out of a tomato packing shed before building our current Scout Den, Bracken Ridge Scouts has grown to be one of the largest and most active Scout Groups in Queensland. Currently we have over 100 Youth Members across 6 Units, with all Units running active and engaging programs.

When you sign your Youth Member up to join Bracken Ridge Scouts, you and your family are joining the Bracken Ridge Scout Family and you have the opportunity to join the Scouting adventure too. We encourage all families to take an active role in our Group so that our Youth Members can have the very best of opportunities.

BENEFITS OF SCOUTING

Scouting is the largest non-formal education organisation in the world and there are many lifelong advantages that young people get from their years enjoying the adventure of Scouting with friends and family. The aim of Scouting is to encourage the physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual development of young people so that they take a constructive place in society as a member of their local, national and international community.
Here are some of the advantages your child can gain from Scouting:
RESILIENCE
In Scouting, we empower young people to make decisions, take the lead and learn by doing. We give them a safe space where they can work with others to plan and embark on their own adventures, indoors and out. By building resilience in young people, we are empowering them to be able to learn from their mistakes and to understand that failing is okay – it’s an integral part of the learning journey.

MENTAL HEALTH
The 2016 UK Childhood Study found that former Scouts are 18% less likely to suffer mood or anxiety disorders than non-Scouts, even decades later, as adults. The study said programs like Scouting that support resilience, social mobility, ‘soft’ non-cognitive skills, self-reliance, collaboration, and activities in natural environments may help protect mental health in adulthood.
LEADERSHIP Unlike school or sport, in Scouting every young person gets a chance at developing their skills in leadership. Scouting is literally developing leaders of the future!
ACADEMIC OUTCOMES
Scouting is linked with better school results, especially at upper secondary levels. The meta-research of Prof. John Hattie, of the University of Melbourne, shows that secondary students do better when they do an extra-curricular activity which is organised and structured, with regular programs, increasingly complex skill building, leadership by one or more competent adults, a social network, leadership opportunities, and age-appropriate goals and expectations. This sounds exactly like Scouting!
